Sedratul Montaha

In the Name of Allah

One of the Secrets of the Magnificence of the Oneness of God is the sending down of his Mercy. Based on this rule that the doer of an act and the action which is done should share the same characteristics; hence, the Words of God are sent down through the channel of His Unity. But why do the Blessings of God appear to be multiple and not one in this world? If God, Who is the One and Only, sends down his Bounty, His Mercy should be sent upon one source not upon many as is the case of this material world.
Mulla Sadra (May Allah exalt his status) in volume 6 of his book, Asfar, has said that when the Words of Allah are first revealed they are not compound (Murrakab), but on the contrary, are united and one (Basit) (p. 305). The entire Words revealed are in one valuable source which is called Sedratul Montaha and all multiplicities occur after this stage. There are various views about the concept of Sedratul Montaha. Some believe Sedratul Montaha is Prophet Mohammad’s Miraaj (Ascension). Others believe it is the Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz (Book of Decrees). Many consider Sedratul Montaha to be the essence of the creation of Fatimah Zahra (SA) and some consider it to be the role of Wilayat. Each of these views is right according to some scholars.
To clarify this issue of unity, when we look around into the air and see dense clouds in the sky, we judge that what we see is a cloud. Or when we see brightness in the sky, we judge that there is light. Similarly, when we see a bird flying in the sky, we judge that one or more are moving together in the sky. Hence, our judgments regarding unity or multiplicity result from our senses such as our eyes which are transferred to our perception and our knowledge. Our judgments are made after entering our perception or our knowledge. In other words, we see something bright and this is transferred to our perception. Or when we see a bird, this is transferred to our memory. Here we judge about the number of birds, the weather or the condition of the clouds. Therefore, our main device for such judgments consists of our five senses. If our senses did not exist, such judgments would not be made.
As previously stated, Mulla Sadra has said, “Words sent down by God to this material world or to the sky of this world are one and are Sedratul Montaha”. From where did this unity arise?
Researcher and Philosopher, Ostad Mousavi has said the following in this regard:
Based on Mulla Sadra’s statements, we can judge that he had an extraordinary divine connection. In other words, his connection was beyond senses as our senses are not able to perceive that what is revealed by Allah is one and united. Perceiving such unity is not possible through the eyes, the ears, or the thought. Understanding this unity is beyond the world of measures.
Mulla Sadra has said that the Words which are sent down by God to this material world are one and are indivisible. When this indivisible whole reaches this material world, it starts dividing. One part which consists of realities and is beyond matter moves towards realities. Another part moves towards Mustahadisat. Mustahadisat are all that exist in this world which are sometimes in one place and at other times in a different place. For example, the place of a crystal may be beautiful, but it is sometimes in a showcase and at other times on a shelf.
It should be reiterated that when different faces appear in this world, materials are in compound form and each compound material has a capacity of its own. Each obtains its own share from the Divine Words and becomes the source of effects based on what it receives. The best examples of these faces are the true servants of God who have received blessings from the Exalted Words of God. They are the people who submit what they have received to this material world and all that is in it through prayers and supplication and at times through their knowledge, wisdom, or gnostic connections. This is how they pour and will always pour the blessings of the Merciful God upon all those which exist.
Zahid Kazemeini said I rose one night for supplication and prayers and realized that I was nothing but darkness. I started pleading and crying asking for forgiveness. I was suddenly told by a voice: “O you the dark-hearted one! Why are you restless? Make use of Our Divine Words! I realized that I had to pray and connect in my prayers with Ismatul Kubra, Fatemah Zahra (AS)”.
