Relation between job and honor of the soul

In the Name of God

This article is about the relation between job and honor of the soul. It is about the worthy jewel of a person’s desire and talent in the realm of social activities. Which job will truly cause honor of the soul in a human? When a person wants to choose a job, what framework is required? The framework of the society, teacher, parent or profession and methods of ancestors?
Subjects which are presented in this article are derived from the researches of divine philosopher, Ostad Mousavi, under the subject of resurrection, interpretation of the Holy Surah Ar-Rūm, and his teaching under Kitab ul-Makasib of Sheikh Morteza Ansari (May Allah exalt their status), and introductory philosophical subjects from volume one of Mulla Sadra’s book, Asfar.
By looking at the society, we understand that many people have forcefully chosen a profession or job in which they have no interest and no skill. Therefore, they move through this path without enthusiasm and perform actions that eventually cause trouble for themselves and tribulation for others.
One of the factors of choosing a job which a person is unwilling to perform can be sought in the behavior of parents. Parents who obligate their children to choose jobs which are according to their own talents are unaware that their children are not delighted to perform these jobs. Nowadays these instances are common among most of the families, while these situations only cause forced labor in the name of science for their children. A jobless person does not have any job, whereas unfree labor is performing a job in which the person does not have interest and is not willing to do it.
It is not right when a father asks his child to follow his job. Basically, a society which obligates children to follow a field of science or a job in which they do not have any interest or speciality is a world of sicknesses. Therefore, talent should merely be excited within a human and should not be enforced.
In this regard, Franklin, who is apparently a western genius, believed that the mother of intellectual and moral corruptions is unfree labor or being unenthusiastic in working.
He said, “Work is the bride of the life and loving our work is bliss. If a person loves his job, its outcome is called bliss.”
Voltaire, a famous western writer, said, “Whenever I feel that affliction is about to make me unable, I take refuge and engage myself in a work which I really love and I only find this love in my teacher and in knowledge because he was the person who taught me the secret of loving science.”
He said that 500 years Before Christ, mental illnesses were cured by doing works such as mechanics, carpentry and weaving, but lessons of their masters were of priority to them. This means that they first had to learn lessons and praising of their masters and then get engaged in the above tasks.
We shall now research the relation between job and honor of the soul in the form of the following two general viewpoints:
In some societies people are engaged in activities and professions which they really love and they give greatness to their soul through this love. Therefore, even though these works appear not be excellent, they have good effects on their lives, even in some works such as cobbling, cooking, etc. Basically, people who are enthusiastic in their jobs, because of believing in honor of the soul, do their work with taste, honor, and beauty. However, in some other societies people perform their work only for earning money and achieving a high status, not for honor of the soul. Therefore, they are willing to do any work. For instance, they sell cigarettes or clean windshields with a cloth. We should know that these kind of persons do not believe in dignity of the soul; therefore, they cannot preserve greatness of their souls.
It should be mentioned that Late Sheikh Morteza Ansari (May Allah exalt his status) was one of the unbeatable scholars in basics of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and fundamentals of principles (Usul) and the status of most scholars resulted from the blessings of Kitab ul-Makasib and the books of Morteza Ansari (May Allah Exalt his status).
He mentioned some artifacts in the text of Makasib which humans can rent out their souls for them and earn the most halal (religiously permissible) money such as teaching and learning, accounts, trading, construction, service providing, laundry, etc. If any of these jobs are done meeting their true condition, they will cause dignity of the soul.
It is narrated that one day Avicenna was passing a place with a few of his companions. He saw a mucker discharging and transferring wastewater while he was murmuring with himself. When Avicenna listened carefully to the mucker he heard that he was saying these secret words to his soul: “O soul! You should know that you are worthy and valuable. If you were not valuable, you would not be in my body.”
Avicenna came forward and asked him, “Who are you talking with?”
He answered, “I am talking with my soul.”
Avicenna asked him, “Which soul are you talking with?”
He replied, “I am speaking with my divine spiritual soul.”
Avicenna said, “Why are you lying? With the job you have, what worth will remain for your soul?”
The mucker replied, “I work according to two rules: first, if I were not a mucker to evacuate wastewater, the residents of this area would beefed up of the unpleasant smell. Second, I earn my money with my own effort and am dependent on no one else as such a person is cursed.
Verily dignity of the soul happens when a person performs essential and fundamental works for the benefit of the society. According to a divine philosopher and Hakim such as Mulla Sadra (May Allah exalt his status) this important point is regarded as follows:
It is necessary for all wise men to choose what is the most important for them which is the perfection of the human soul for comprehending the realities of creatures according to their own capacity because all people will be resurrected on the Judgment Day with that which they have within them and are filled with.
