In the Name of Allah
Heaven and Hell according to Mulla Sadra
In chapter ten of Vol. 9 of Mulla Sadra's revised version of the book
Asfar the subject of Resurrection (Ma'ad)
and its final events, Heaven and Hell have been discussed and the
concluding question is "Do we have to
seek Resurrection and Return and the effect and principles of
Resurrection outside our physical bodies or within ourselves?
The great philosopher, Mulla Sadra has discussed different views under
the title "On the Differences of Men in Comprehending the Issue of
Resurrection".
v
Some believe that The Day of Judgment and its result exists in the
"Fourth Sky".
v
And some believe it exists in the "Seventh Level of the Earth".
What can be comprehended from the text of the Holy Quran and the
Narrations of our Imams and wisdom is that the issue of Resurrection,
and its outcome, i.e. Heaven and Hell certainly exist and are not
suppositional. Mulla Sadra believes: "Since Heaven and Hell are the
place of rewarding and punishment, they should exist outside".
But in order for us to comprehend these two endowments simply, Almighty
Allah has placed a reflection of Heaven and Hell within man's Divine
Soul.
Although consensus of opinion does not exist in this regard, Mulla Sadra
after conducting a research states in Vol. 9 of his book, Asfar
on page 176: "There exists a world within man, which is greater and
vaster than that existing in the skies and the Earth."
To answer issues such as how can Heaven with all its greatness and Hell
with its status fit within a man and how can such a subject be justified
according to modern science and in order to clarify Mulla Sadra's words,
Esteemed researcher and philosopher, Ostad
Mousavi states some scientific reasons to confirm Mulla Sadra's
view. Some will be explained below:
All through the body of a human-being there are approximately 350,000
sensory receptors, each one of which gives us the power to sense pain,
patting, heaviness and lightness. In other words, on average in every
100 mm of the skin of a body, there are approximately 235 receptors; so
if the skin is touched, it can sense whether it is a stranger or a
friend, a pin or a breeze, coldness or warmth….
Throughout our body, places which are more sensitive have more
receptors, for example the tip of the tongue has approximately thirty
touch receptors in each cm2 and this tiny area is capable of
distinguishing all tastes - including bitter, sweet and salty - at any
time.
Hence, how can we say that the soul, with all its greatness does not
have the capacity to have all the vastness of the world within itself?
In
conclusion,
in response to this question that how can a world greater and vaster
than that which exists in this world with the sky and Earth fit in a
human-being who is approximately 150 cm, we should say that in addition
to the reasons given above, the neurons inside the brain give us the
power to solve an infinite number of mathematical problems. Or presently
over 33 billion galaxies have been discovered each containing
approximately a thousand stars and each star at an approximate distance
of a few light-years from the other. All these phenomena fit in the grey
matter of our brain. Or building submarines, warships, 150 storey
buildings all are the result of mathematical equations which are
conducted in the grey matter of the brain.
Therefore, just as such a small amount of matter can contain many
worlds, is it not possible to say that the soul with its greatness
contains Hell and its Fire and Heaven and its Blessings?
This was a summary of Mulla Sadra's viewpoint on the greatness of man. |
